Conflict - Due Monday, September 30th

Every good story needs conflict or drama.  Thinking about your book, please list four examples of conflict that have occurred within your text.  Please identify which type of conflict you are describing, as well as which book you are reading.  For example:

I am reading the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio.  In the book there are quite a few conflicts that arise.  Here are three:

Person vs. Person:  Auggie's mom vs. Auggie's dad arguing about Auggie starting to go to public school.

Person vs. Society: Auggie is dealing with society accepting his facial deformity.

Person vs. Self: Auggie is conflicted whether or not he wants to go to school.

Person vs. Nature:  Mom dealing with the farting nurse at the hospital.

Main Character and Author Questions - Due Thursday September 26th

Please identify which book you are reading, as well as which character you are choosing before you begin your blog post.  What are three questions you would want to ask the main character in your Guided Reading text?  What are two questions you would want to ask the author of your book?

I am reading the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio, the main character I am choosing is Auggie.  Three questions I would ask Auggie are:

  • What has been the most difficult thing about having a facial deformity?
  • If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
  • What are your dreams for the future.
Two question I would like to ask R.J. Palacio are:
  • Where did you get the inspiraton for the story?
  • Did you ever feel like an outsider in school?  If so, when?

Character Changes - Due Monday September 23rd

Choose a character from your Guided Reading text.  Try to choose a character you haven't chosen before.  I then want you to list three major problems that character has faced during their life, and then identify which one has been the most life changing, and why.

Example:

Hermoine Granger - Harry Potter:

  1. People make fun of her because she is smart.
  2. She sometimes gets stuck in the middle of her two best friends, Ron and Harry.
  3. She is a 'Muggle-Born' and a lot of people give her grief about that.
I think the problem that has been most life changing for Hermoine is dealing with her friendships with Ron and Harry.  I think this because she feels she has to continue to keep things smooth between the both of them, while also dealing with her growing feelings for Ron.  She also knows that their friendship staying strong, is essential for taking on Lord Voldemort and saving Harry's life.

Character Birthday Present - Due Thursday September 19th

Choose a character from your Guided Reading Book.  In the first sentence, identify which book you are reading (this should be underlined), as well as which character you are choosing to buy a present for.  Then you will decide what an appropriate birthday present would be for the character you chose.  Describe why you chose the item you did, and how you think the character might react.

Example: I am reading the book Wonder by RJ Palacio.  The character I am choosing is Auggie.  If I were invited to Auggie's birthday party I would buy him a insecurity meter.  This insecurity meter would allow him to see into other kids heads what they are insecure or uncomfortable about like Auggie is about his appearance.  I think that Auggie would enjoy his new present, because it would help him to feel more like the other children by knowing he isn't the only one that has insecurities about themselves.

MAKE SURE TO ANSWER ALL PARTS OF THE QUESTION IN COMPLETE SENTENCES!  CHECK YOUR SPELLING AND CAPITALIZATION BEFORE YOU SUBMIT YOUR RESPONSE!!!!

Compare and Contrast - Due Monday September 16

Compare the main character of your Guided Reading text to a character in another book you have read.  How are the characters similar?  How are the characters different?

For Example...

If I was reading a Twilight book, the main character Bella might remind me of Katniss from the Hunger games because they are both brave.  They both have love interests that are facing major conflict.  They are different because Katniss is fighting for her life, and Bella is trying to live forever.

Character Traits - Due Thursday September 12th

List three character traits about the main character in your Guided Reading book.  For each trait you list, provide textual evidence to support your traits.

For example...

If I were to say a character trait of Harry Potter is that he is brave, I would support it with something from the chapters I have just been reading to prove that to be true.  (i.e. he stood up to Professor Snape, he scared away the Dementors...etc.)
